US Diploma Mills

Diploma mill: An institution of higher education operating without supervision of a state or professional agency and granting diplomas which are either fraudulent or because of the lack of proper standards worthless. —Webster’s Third New International Dictionary

A diploma mill is a fake business that camouflages itself as a legitimate college, university, or career school. A diploma mill or degree mill will pose as a real university and award degrees without truly evaluating academic work from its students. These fake schools and institutions  make money by selling printed degrees and providing academic references or falsified transcripts to individuals who may or may not be aware that the credentials are meaningless.

Concerns about phoney credentials have been mounting. This is also due to virtual schools and institutes offering degrees more than ever now. The use of diploma mills is exploding as the Internet makes bogus degrees easier to get than ever before. More workers are buying these degrees because they're looking for an edge in the competitive job market. And with more legitimate colleges offering online degrees, the environment is ripe for diploma mills to flourish, because it's harder to determine whether a degree earned long distance is really legitimate. In addition, many diploma mills adopt names that are similar to bona fide universities or colleges.

Such Universities carries out an aggressive marketing campaign. In their marketing and advertising campaigns they will often misleadingly claim to be “accredited” when, in fact, they are found to have been endorsed by “dummy” accreditation boards set up by company affiliates. They  even advertise services for transcript notation and diploma verification in order to seem more legitimate , but don’t even think about enrolling in such schools because what you will get from them in the form of degree is nothing but a piece of useless paper, which no employer accepts.

Verification and Legitimacy of University

  • There are a number of ways by which you can verify that your online college is legitimate and accredited. First and foremost, you can check with the United States Department of Education. They keep records of universities that are accredited, and can tell you if the one you select is in the list.
  • The Council for Higher Education is another similar resource. They can tell you if your online institution is legitimate or not. There's also the Diploma Mill Police. They have reports and track over hundreds of diploma scams.
