Undergraduate Education System

In the United States, most undergraduate education takes place at four-year colleges or universities. Some institutions (e.g. liberal-arts colleges) offer primarily or exclusively undergraduate education, while most universities offer graduate study as well. Successful completion of undergraduate work generally requires the completion of many courses of varying subject and difficulty and a concentration or major that focuses on a particular academic discipline. In many universities, students have to take compulsory foreign language programs throughout their education depending on their previous foreign language study at the school level.

Bachelor's Degree

A bachelor’s degree is an undergraduate degree that is awarded to the students after their completion of undergraduate program in a particular discipline of education. The duration of the undergraduate degree program differs from country to country. While in some countries, the program can be completed with in 3 years, some countries have 5 years bachelor degree programs also.

In the USA, it takes four years for a person to attain an undergraduate degree. Typically comprising 120-128 credits, most universities will allow the transfer of up to 60 credits from associate degrees or community college programs. The bachelor degree under US university system is divided into two categories:
  • Bachelors degree with honors
  • Bachelors degree without honors- also known as “rite”
Bachelors degree with honors is further divided
  • Bachelor degree with honors-cum laude (with praise)
  • Bachelor degree with honors- magna cum laude" (with great praise)
  • Bachelor degree with honors -summa cum laude" (with highest praise)
The students are awarded all the honors degree on the basis of Grade Point Averages (GPA) scored by them during their undergraduate program.

Financial Aid for Undergraduate Programs

Most students have to pay a huge amount of tuition fee which varies for different categories of students, for example, for instate students, the fee is less than out of state students and international students have the highest amount of fee. But this should not deter you from going for higher education, there are ample of initiatives by the state and fedral government. These initiatives highlight the importance of education beyond high school and provide resources that reinforce the message that college is within reach for all.
