NCLEX: National Council Licensure Examination

The NCLEX (National Council Licensure Examination), developed and owned by National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) : is conducted to offer licenses to nurses in the US and Canada. NCLEX is designed to assess the ability required for safe practice for effective nursing.

NCLEX, the exam is divided in to two types:
  • NCLEX-RN: For registered nurses
  • NCLEX-PN: For vocational/practical nurses
NCLEX exam is offered in computerized adaptive testing (CAT) pattern. This exam is administered by Pearson VUE in their network of Pearson Professional Centers (PPC).

These two examinations are used by the Boards of Nursing to test entry-level nursing competence of candidates for licensure as Registered Nurses and as Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurses. The NCLEX examinations are provided exclusively as computerized adaptive tests and available in English and French.

Eligibility

The NCLEX is prerequisite to nurse licensure in the USA and Canada. Different nursing boards have different eligibility criteria. Therefore, it is advisable that applicants contact their respect boards for respective eligibility criteria.
