TOEFL - Introduction

Asses the ability of non-native speakers: The Test of English as a Foreign Language or TOEFL is the most widely accepted English language test. TOEFL is done to assess the ability of a non-native speaker to understand and use English language academically.

History: TOEFL was developed to ensure the English language fluency of non-native speakers, who wish to study in the U.S. Of late TOEFL has become a compulsory requirement for admission in the US universities. In addition, many government agencies, scholarship programs, and licensing/certification agencies use TOEFL scores to evaluate English proficiency.

Educational Testing Services: TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is administered by Educational Testing Services across the world. Some of the institutes located outside the United States also accept TOEFL score as a measurement of English proficiency of a candidate. More than 8,500 colleges, universities and agencies in 130 countries accept TOEFL scores.

Score Validity: TOEFL score is valid for 2years. TOEFL uses the most recent score.

Eligibility

There is no eligibility criterion, though you could take it at high school as the level of test is tough. The test is taken up by non natives who speak English as a second language and want to apply for admission in colleges or for higher education. Although the level of test is tough but anyone who has passed  12 years of schooling from any recognized board or university can take up the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) test. Although the level of test is high.

Exemption From TOEFL

Several institutions report that they often do NOT require TOEFL test scores from certain categories of international applicants. These include:

People from non-native English countries who hold degrees/diplomas from post secondary institutions in English-speaking countries (e.g., the United States, Canada, Australia, England, Ireland, New Zealand).

Non-native speakers who have successfully completed at least a two-years course of study in which English as the language of instruction.

Transfer students from institutions in the United States or Canada whose academic course work was favorably evaluated in relation to its demands and duration.

Non-native speakers who have taken the TOEFL test within the past two years.

Non-native speakers who have successfully pursued academic work at schools where English was the language of instruction in an English-speaking country for a specified period (2years).
It is always advisable that students contact directly to prospective institutions  for admission requirements.

Registration

Candidates willing to write TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) must  register for anyone of the following tests administered by ETS (Educational Testing Services) across the world.

TOEFL iBT (Internet Based Testing)

Online: Registration 24x7: Register 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Payment: You can use credit/debit card (American Express, Discover, JCB, MasterCard or VISA). You can also use a PayPal account or an electronic check (e-check if you have a bank account in the United States or its territories.)

Payment can be made by using a registration voucher obtained from a local master TOEFL iBT Resource Center.

Note: American Express, Discover, JCB and MasterCard are NOT accepted for the following locations: Benin, Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria and Togo.

Registration closes seven days before your test date.

Late registration closes three days before your test date (not including the day of the test) and has a late fee of US$35.


Physically disabled: People with disabilities or health-related issues are required to bring equipment, food or drinks into the testing room, take extra or extended breaks, or require another accommodation must register by mail and need to follow the accommodations request procedures as mentioned by ETS

Payment:

Registration closes seven days before your test date (not including the day of the test). Late registration by phone closes at 5 p.m. local test center time on the business day before the test and has a late fee.

By Mail : Filling the form: Download and fill the registration form.

Payment: Choose one of the payment methods listed on the form.

Dispatch: Send the form with your payment to the address on the form or to your regional registration center.

Forms must be received at least four weeks before your test date. Incase you do not receive a confirmation; call at least 3days prior to the registration deadline the location where you had sent your documents.

If you register by mail you will need to enter certain codes manually that are updated automatically online

In Person : In some areas, you can purchase test registration vouchers with local currency and/or register in person at a master TOEFL iBT Resource Center.

If you don't want to register at a TOEFL iBT Resource Center, you can use a registration voucher online from any computer or  through phone.

Registration deadline is seven days before the test date.

Late registration closes three days before your test date and has a late fee.

When you register, make sure to spell your name exactly as it appears on the identification you bring on test day.

Note: Walk-in registration at the test center is not allowed.

PBT (Paper Based Testing) Online or by Mail or Fax or by Voucher.

The paper-based test is offered in locations where the TOEFL iBT test is not available.
