College Prep for Architecture Engineering Major

Architecture is based on the scientific discipline; its essence is in the arts. Architectural engineering majors work with others to imagine buildings and structures, from straw bale houses to the tallest skyscrapers. Architectural engineers providing shelter and environmental protection with the highest standards for energy efficiency and environmentally sustainable architecture, designing appropriate settings for human activities, and creating forms that are aesthetically pleasing and supportive of social well-being and environmental health.

The architectural engineering major prepares graduates for professional work in the analysis, design, construction, and operation of residential, commercial, institutional, and industrial buildings. Students study the principles of structural reinforcement and external cladding, building environmental systems and project management and develop depth in at least one area. Students use computer-aided design tools to understand system interactions; perform analysis, design, scheduling, and cost analysis; and demonstrate their work. The future for the architectural engineer is extremely exciting and expanding.

Following are the college preparation ways and means:

Applicants must:
i. Have undergraduate courses in pre-calculus, calculus, linear algebra, statistics and differential equations.
ii. Have two semesters of undergraduate calculus-based physics, chemistry, biology, and art classes like drawing, graphic design and CAD.
iii. Have at least two semesters of upper-division undergraduate courses in arts and design.
iv. Standardized Scores must be submitted:
  • Provide official GRE scores from an examination taken within the last 5 years. All applicants from a university outside the US are required to submit General GRE scores for admission consideration. Applicants who are US graduates can submit GRE scores if they feel their scores will enhance their admission prospect.
  • Official TOEFL / IELTS scores must be submitted: High proficiency in the English language is essential for admission to our graduate program. Applicants whose native language is not English are required to take the TOEFL exam. Applicants must meet or exceed the minimum on the Internet-based test.
v. Provide letters of recommendation: Three letters of recommendation from faculty members or employers who can assess the applicant's academic potential for a graduate program are essential.
vi. Provide a statement of purpose: Usually two or three pages in length depicting what you want to study, why you want to study it, what you plan to serve. It reveals about your choice and your ideas, commitment and sentiments.
vii. Provide a creative Portfolio: Architecture colleges require portfolio submission wherein the emphasis is on your creativity and visualization.

Students concentrating in architectural engineering must undergo courses in design, structural engineering, electrical engineering, thermodynamics and construction management. A typical program includes courses in architectural history and theory, building design with an emphasis on CADD, structures, technology, construction methods, professional practice, mathematics, physical sciences, and liberal arts. Central to most architectural programs is the design studio, where students apply the skills and concepts learned in the classroom, creating drawings and three-dimensional models of their designs.

The course work addresses principles of design concepts, materials, construction, systems, planning, history and visual judgment which are fundamental for the evolution of the creative process. The course work is progressive offering foundation knowledge, skills and vocabulary, while upper-level study seeks a broader understanding of architecture by combining theoretical exploration with practical considerations.
