Admission Requirements for Top 5 Electrical & Electronic Engineering Schools

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Cambridge, MA)

World-renowned for both rigor and innovation, EE is the largest undergraduate program at MIT. Electrical Engineering program at MIT prepares students to explore subjects critical to advancement in today’s high-tech society.

The application deadline for MIT is January 1, and the early action deadline is November1. Standardized Test Scores for either the ACT / SAT or TOEFL test are considered. Interview is also the part of the admission procedure.

SAT/ACT scores must be received by the Institute by February 15. For native English speakers the SAT Reasoning Test or the ACT plus Writing with the writing test is preferred. In addition, two SAT Subject Tests: one in math (level 1 or 2), and one in science preferably physics for electrical and electronic engineering major (physics, chemistry, or biology e/m) is essentially considered. For non-native English speakers either  tests required for native English speakers or  the TOEFL and two SAT Subject Tests, one in math (level 1 or 2) and one in science (physics, chemistry, or biology e/m) is considered. Because MIT is an English medium university, language proficiency is  crucial.

Along with the standardized scores and interview, on-line application form needs to be filled and submitted with personal details, field of interest, and educational history. Also, the scanned copies of academic transcripts and statement of objective is required for the admission.

The Electrical Engineering department does not require GRE scores for Graduate admission purpose. Admission is determined by GPA (Grade Point Average), three letters of recommendation and a Statement of Purpose in which you write an essay detailing your research interests. A very strong background in math, physics, or engineering is a necessity.

Stanford University (Stanford, CA)

Engineering has always been an important subject at Stanford. The graduate study application deadline is December 10. The materials required along with the application are: academic records i.e. transcripts, test scores i.e. GRE and TOEFL, Statement of Purpose, and three letters of recommendation. Adequate command of spoken and written English is required for admission. Applicants whose first language is not English must submit an official test score from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Stanford accepts only ETS (Educational Testing Service) scores.

University of California-Berkeley (Berkeley, CA)

Admission to UC Berkeley EE Department considers all achievement—both academic and nonacademic/personal—in the context of your educational circumstances, with an emphasis on the opportunities or challenges presented to you and your response to them. All prospective freshmen must submit scores from the ACT plus Writing or the SAT Reasoning Test. Also, the applicant must complete the high school courses in science and math with a good GPA.

For graduate level, Applicants are required to provide the following: evidence of superior performance in the last 2 years of undergraduate studies; test scores for the aptitude portion of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and 3 letters of recommendation from professors or colleagues familiar with the applicant's academic and professional aptitudes. International students whose native language is not English must provide evidence of English language proficiency by providing test scores from either the TOEFL or International English Language Testing System (IELTS). You may also submit an IELTS score of an overall Band score of 7 on a 9-point scale.

University of Illinois- Urbana Champaign (Urbana, IL)

The College of Engineering at Illinois is among the world's most prestigious and largest engineering institutions, with undergraduate and graduate programs ranked in the Top Five nationally and internationally. The widely cited U.S. News & World Report rankings annually place Illinois very highly for their electrical engineering undergraduate and graduate programs.

The application filing deadline is January 2 and the supporting documents along with the     fee must be submitted by January 12.

For undergraduate program, the application includes a list of your high school courses and grades, a major selection, two essays, a list of extracurricular activities, and honors and awards. Standardized test scores are required for admission review: either ACT or SAT scores are accepted. Official test scores must be sent directly from the testing agency. Score of at least 25 on the ACT English portion or 550 on the SAT Critical Reading portion and a minimum of 100 on the Internet-based (iBT) Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required for the admission. Score a minimum total of 7.5 on the International English Testing System (IELTS) with a minimum score of 7 on all four modules.

For graduate program, Prospective students should have their application and all  support documents, including GRE and TOEFL scores, submitted. Resume, Statement of  Purpose (1-2 pages), and three letters of recommendation is mandatory.

California Institute of Technology (Pasadena, CA)

EE at Caltech emphasizes both the fundamentals of electronics and systems, as well as acknowledging the multi-disciplinary nature of the field. . The application deadline for Electrical Engineering program at Caltech is December 15. Applicants are required to submit the application form and supporting materials online prior to the deadline.

The supporting materials include SAT w/writing OR ACT w/writing, SAT Mathematics Level 2, 1 SAT Subject Test: Physics TOEFL (for international students) and GRE (for graduate school) scores. In addition to a completed application form, applicants are required, where applicable, to submit several additional supporting documents such as Statement of purpose, Transcripts from schools or colleges attended and at least three letters of recommendation.
