Admission Requirements for Top 5 Environmental Engineering Schools

University of California-Berkeley (Berkeley, CA)

Minimum requirements for entry into the Environmental Engineering program consist of: Math-equivalent of 2 years, including calculus, linear algebra and differential equations; Science- 1 semester of physics, 2 additional semesters of science (physics, chemistry, biology). Additionally, experience with Matlab or other high-level programming language and Physics and/or chemistry coursework. The application deadline is November 30. Along with the online application form, the Environmental Engineering department also requires Transcripts, Letters of Recommendation; Standardized Test scores i.e. ACT plus Writing or the SAT Reasoning Test and Science and TOEFL/IELTS scores, and Personal Statement or Statement of Purpose ( 2 typed pages).

For graduate level, Applicants are required to provide the following: evidence of superior performance in the last 2 years of undergraduate studies; Graduate Record Examination (GRE) test scores and 3 letters of recommendation from professors or colleagues familiar with the applicant's academic and professional aptitudes.

Stanford University (Stanford, CA)

The application deadline for Stanford University is January 1, and the early action deadline is November 1. Standardized Test Scores for either the ACT / SAT or TOEFL test are considered. SAT/ACT scores must be received by the Institute by January1. Along with standardized test scores, an application form and common application essay is considered of minimum 250 and maximum 650 words. The basic idea behind application essay as a part of admission procedure is to gauge the character and thoughts.

The graduate study application deadline is December 3. The materials required along with the application are: academic records i.e. transcripts, test scores i.e. GRE and TOEFL, Statement of Purpose, and three letters of recommendation. Adequate command of spoken and written English is required for admission. Applicants whose first language is not English must submit an official test score from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Stanford accepts only ETS (Educational Testing Service) scores.

University of Illinois- Urbana Champaign (Urbana, IL)

The application filing deadline is January 2 and the supporting documents along with the fee must be submitted by January 12. The application includes a list of your high school courses and grades, a major selection, two essays, a list of extracurricular activities, and honors and awards. Standardized test scores are also required for admission review: either ACT or SAT 1 scores are considered. Official test scores must be sent directly from the testing agency. Score of at least 25 on the ACT English portion or 550 on the SAT Critical Reading portion and a minimum of 100 on the Internet-based (iBT) Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required for the admission. Score a minimum total of 7.5 on the International English Testing System (IELTS) with a minimum score of 7 on all four modules.

For graduate program, Prospective students should have their application and all support documents, including GRE and TOEFL scores, submitted. Resume, Statement of purpose (1-2 pages), and three letters of recommendation is mandatory.

University of Michigan- Ann Arbor (Ann Arbor, MI)

The Environmental Engineering Department looks for applicants who have demonstrated academic effort through a minimum GPA of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale.

Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General test scores are required. Three letters of recommendation with the official Rackham Recommendation Form cover sheet from people who are familiar with you, in particular faculty members who have supervised your coursework and/or research is vital for admission. At least 2 of the     recommendation letters must be from faculty. Official TOEFL scores (only for international applicants or non-native speakers of English).-The TOEFL minimum requirement is 84. The Admissions Committee is most interested in undergraduate and graduate academic performance, GRE scores, research experience, letters of recommendation (especially coming from faculty at least 2 from faculty are required) and the academic statement of intent.

Georgia Institute of Technology (Atlanta, GA)

For Undergraduate program, the early application deadline is October 21. Along with the application, documents such as standardized test scores SAT/ or ACT, the extracurricular involvement portion, essay, and high school reports are considered for the evaluation. GA Tech uses all three portions of the SAT and/or the three equivalent parts of the ACT i.e.
  • SAT Critical Reading = ACT English
  • SAT Math = ACT Math
  • SAT Writing = ACT Combined English/Writing
Only the highest section scores from wither test is viewed in the evaluation process.

For graduate program, the application deadline for fall semester is January 5 and for spring semester is August 31. An application form, personal statement of 300-400 words, three recommendation letter, and GRE and TOEFL test scores are required for admissions.
