Admission Requirements for Top 5 Material Engineering Schools

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Cambridge, MA)

The application deadline for MIT is January 1, and the early action deadline is November1.
Standardized Test Scores for either the ACT / SAT or TOEFL test are considered.
Interview is also the part of the admission procedure.

SAT/ACT scores must be received by the Institute by February 15. For native English speakers the SAT Reasoning Test or the ACT plus Writing with the writing test is preferred. In addition, two SAT Subject Tests: one in math (level 1 or 2), and one in science (physics, chemistry, or biology e/m) is essentially considered. For non-native English speakers either  tests required for native English speakers or the TOEFL and two SAT Subject Tests, one in math (level 1 or 2) and one in science (physics, chemistry, or biology e/m) is considered. Because MIT is an English medium university, language proficiency is crucial.

Along with the standardized scores, letters of recommendation, essay and interview,     application forms need to be filled and submitted. Also, the scanned copies of academic     transcripts and statement of objective is required for the admission.

Stanford University (Stanford, CA)

The undergrad Regular Decision application deadline for Stanford University is January 2. Standardized Test Scores for either the ACT / SAT or TOEFL test are considered. SAT/ACT scores must be received by the Institute by January1. It is most selective, with an acceptance rate of 6.6 percent. Along with standardized test scores, an application form and common application essay is considered of minimum 250 and maximum 650 words.  The basic idea behind application essay as a part of admission procedure is to gauge the character and thoughts. Essay writing basically reflects the applicant’s voice.

The graduate application for admission requires Statement of Purpose, three recommendation letters, educational history and test results of GRE and TOEFL/IELTS. GRE - General Test results are required: both scores and percentages for each individual test.

University of California- Santa Barbara (Santa Barbara, CA)

The program for the Materials includes courses in physical sciences, or mathematics, with a minimum GPA of 3.2 and strong letters of recommendation from individuals who can evaluate the applicant’s potential for graduate education and research. The Graduate application deadline is December 9. An electronic application along with the supporting documents that include Statement of purpose, Statement of Achievements/Contribution, Resume or CV, Three Letters of Recommendation, Official Transcripts from all post-secondary educational institutions, and Official GRE and TOEFL scores.

Northwestern University-McCormick (Evanston, IL)

For Undergraduate program, the early decision application deadline is November 1 and the Regular Decision application deadline is January 1. SAT Reasoning Test or ACT with writing is required and also, two SAT Subject Tests are recommended. A common application and writing supplement, Secondary School Report that includes high school transcript and counselor recommendation letter, Teacher Recommendation and TOEFL or IELTS scores are mandatory for admission. Admission interviews are not required and are an optional addition to your application for admission. All interviews are conducted off-campus by North western’s regional Alumni Admission Councils (AAC). For graduate program, transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate institutions must be sent electronically. GRE scores, Letters of Recommendation, Statement of Purpose in 1200 words or less, and a two-page CV are required.

University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign (Urbana, IL)

The undergraduate admission at Illinois considers- high school GPA, standardized test scores (ACT or SAT), and high school percentile rank (HSRP). The application deadline is January 2. The test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the IELTS is also required of all the applicants who have attended a school in a country where English is not the primary language. This test must be less than two years old at the time of enrolment. It also accepts IELTS score in place of TOEFL.

For graduate program, the fall semester deadline is January 1 and the spring semester deadline is October 1. The documents to be submitted in order for an applicant to be considered for admission are- Transcripts and Certificates of Degree, One-page Statement of Purpose, Resume, Three Letters of Reference, and GRE score.
