SHSAT - Introduction

The Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT) is a test offered to students studying in grade 8 or 9, for admission to the best high schools in New York city. Every year nearly 30,000 students in New York city take the test for about 3,000 seats.

New York's specialized high schools' admission are based on Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT). Those who receive offers have to decide by the end of February whether to start attending the school in the following September.


  • Eligibility: Eighth and ninth graders who live in New York city may take the test.
  • Students must be residents of New York city.
Frequency: October and November, results are declared by the following February

International Students:
  Official records must indicate that you arrived in New York city after the last audition date.
