Admission Requirements for Top 5 Nuclear Engineering Schools

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Cambridge, MA):

MIT expects its graduates to have an understanding and appreciation of the basic concepts and methods of the physical and biological sciences, mathematics, English, social studies and history, and science. Early Action (available to citizens and permanent residents of the United States only) has a November 1 deadline. Regular Action candidates must complete the application process by January 1 of the year of intended entrance. The admission process also includes standardized test scores of SAT/ACT and TOEFL. Also, applicants must submit a certified transcript of the college record to date, three letters of recommendation from faculty instructors and a secondary school transcript sent directly from the secondary school. For graduate admission, GRE scores, three letters of recommendation, and official transcripts are needed.

University of Michigan-Ann Arbor (Ann Arbor, MI):

The U-M requires the common application form, U-M Member Questions and Writing Supplement, high school transcripts and school reports, one teacher evaluation, SAT or ACT with writing test scores, and TOEFL, MELAB or IELTS score (for non-native speakers of English) for admission to the undergraduate Nuclear Engineering program. The Early Action deadline is November 1 and fall term deadline is February 1.

Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General test scores- The Nuclear Engineering Department looks for applicants who achieve a minimum of a combined Verbal and Quantitative score of 308, and an Analytical Writing score of 4.0 on the revised GRE.

Three letters of recommendation with the official Rackham Recommendation Form cover sheet from people who are familiar with you, in particular faculty members who have supervised your coursework and/or research is vital for admission. At least 2 of the recommendation letters must be from faculty. Official TOEFL scores (only for international applicants or non-native speakers of English).-The TOEFL minimum requirement is 84. The Admissions Committee is most interested in undergraduate and graduate academic performance, GRE scores, research experience, letters of recommendation (especially coming from faculty at least 2 from faculty are required) and the academic statement of intent.

University of Wisconsin- Madison (Madison, WI):

The first fall application deadline is November 1, second fall is February 3 and spring semester application deadline is October 1. The admission to the University is holistic, selective and competitive. They consider the coursework undertaken, written statements, Standardized Test scores SAT or ACT plus writing, and one or two letters of recommendation. For graduate admissions, a minimum GPA of 3.0, Official transcripts, GRE scores, and TOEFL scores are required. Every applicant whose native language is not English, or whose undergraduate instruction was not in English, must provide an English proficiency test score.

Texas A&M University-College Station-Look (College Station, TX):

For undergraduate admission, the spring application deadline is October 15 and Summer/fall term deadline is December 1.  The required documents are: a completed ApplyTexas Application, application fee, essays, an official high school transcript with a numerical class rank and graduation plan, a curriculum verification form, and Official SAT or ACT scores including the writing component. Admission into the Nuclear Engineering graduate program is based upon many factors including GPA, GRE scores, and three letters of recommendation and the statement of purpose. TOEFL scores are also required of International Applicants. A minimum score of 80 must be met for consideration. Applicants may also either submit a resume or curriculum vita to further support their application.

North Carolina State University (Raleigh, NC):

NC State Undergraduate Admissions employs a holistic approach in reviewing students’ applications. For Undergrad admissions, NC State considers GPA and Class rank, SAT or ACT plus writing scores (no more than 5 years old), extracurricular activities, Self-Reported Academic Record that includes list of coursework and grades from each institution attended,  high school transcripts and common application form with application fee. The application deadline is january15 and for spring semester, the deadline is October 1. For graduate program, the admission process includes submission of GRE scores, three letters of recommendation (optional), Personal Statement, One unofficial transcript from each previously attended college or university, and proof of English Proficiency i.e. TOEFL/IELTS scores.

A TOEFL with a total score of at least 80 on the Internet-based test (iBT) or IELTS (International English Language Testing System) scores with an overall band score of at least 6.5.  The graduate program fall term deadline is June 25, spring is November 25, Summer 1 is March25 and Summer 2 is May 10 for U.S. Citizens.
